Thunderbird Spring 2021 Edition

The Camp Cory Alumni Association has, for many years, assembled on an intermittent basis to support the camp in achieving specific objectives. Though this strategy has proven effective for certain tasks, the lack of a consistent presence has limited its potential. Over the past year, the association has been reinvigorated. We are focused on a renewed purpose for the association, formalizing our efforts in our monthly meetings, and expanding our committee membership to be more representative of Camp Cory eras.

We’re excited to share here the renewed purpose statements which will direct the association’s activities. The Camp Cory Alumni Association exists to:

  1. Bring Camp Cory Alumni Together
  2. Serve as Ambassadors for Camp Cory
  3. Preserve Camp Cory’s Legacy

Additionally, we have adopted “Help the Other Fellow” as our motto to highlight the value of volunteerism that we seek to promote.

To Bring Camp Cory Alumni Together, we have hosted several Zoom reunions for CIT groups, with several more in the works. In January, we designed and hosted the annual Alumni Holiday Party, bringing over 40 alumni together virtually.

To Serve as Ambassadors for Camp Cory, we are planning our first ever Alumni Volunteer Weekend in May to make a lasting impact on the camp. Additionally, we currently have four Camp Cory Management Board members on the committee to ensure we are aligned to the camp’s highest priorities.

Highest among our priorities is to serve in an advisory role in the planning and execution of Camp Cory’s 100th Anniversary Celebration, scheduled for June 2022. (We will be announcing the date soon!) In this effort to Preserve Camp Cory’s Legacy, we are actively learning about its history, as well as imagining the future of Camp Cory, so that we may celebrate in a way that is befitting of this significant milestone.

Follow us on social media to reconnect, to learn about opportunities for engaging with Camp Cory and its alumni community. See “Let’s Connect” at the end of the newsletter for links.

The Alumni Association is composed of the following energetic alums: Chris Dudley, Lisa Falvo, Pat Foster (ex officio), Aaron Frishman, Perry Jacobs, Beth McNamara, Wendy Parisi, Aaron Proietti, and Randi Stern.

We asked and you shared. Here are your favorite sounds of Camp Cory:

“So many…taps, waves, tether ball.” – Kate Beale Maguire
“The sound of the stones crunching under the car when first pulling in from the road.” – Bill Smith
“The sound of the waiter bell and then the echo of all the campers also shouting out ‘waiter bell’ across the camp property.” – Chris Dudley
“I don’t know about favorite but the Polar Bear Cheer is certainly a unique Cory memory.” – Mike Ginsberg
“CONSTANT laughter in the dining hall” – Emmy Lundquist
“So many but … The clink of the halyard clips on the masts at night. Crackle of campfire. Bursts of laughter from cabins after taps.” – Janet Morrison
“Maijgren cheers lifting the roof off the dining hall.” – Don Curtis

Greetings Camp Cory Alumni!

While this year has brought many challenges to all of us, the Camp Cory Staff Team and I are filled with excitement about this coming summer. We are working hard to make sure that the campers that will be arriving this summer will have a welcome break from the pandemic. We are currently developing our new schedule to accommodate all of the necessary changes to safely run camp this summer. During all of this, I am thrilled to see the outpouring of support from our fantastic alumni and our group of volunteers. We could not get to this summer without your support.

However, we are not done yet! As we get ready for our 100th summer, we are still in need of volunteers to get camp ready. Please join me at our Alumni Association Volunteer Weekend May 7-9 as we work to get the camp ready for summer. The cost is $30 per person to cover food and some programming for families! We will also have lots of updates about our centennial celebration in June 2022.

Want to stay at camp this summer? We would love to have you and your family as our guest in the Alumni Cabin. Fill out our Alumni Cabin Request Form to find a time to reconnect at Cory!

Thank you so much for your support of Camp Cory. We’ll see you this summer!
Pat Foster, Executive Director, YMCA Camp Cory

Help camp get ready for its 2021 summer season by volunteering. We’ll be putting in the docks, painting the inside of senior cabins, raking, and moving items out of storage to different areas of camp.

Note: if you have experience as a tradesperson, please let Pat know if you are able to help, as he may have a more specialized project for you to work on.

Covid considerations for volunteers: Social distancing and face masking will be self-monitored. You will not be asked to work in close contact with anyone outside of your arrival party. If you have questions, please email Pat.

Find out more information on summer camp here.

We are scheduling alumni zooms and parties by era! Please send us the years you were at Cory and in what capacity (camper, CIT, staff, etc.). We would love to hear from you and we’ll be sure to keep you apprised of all of the activities we are organizing.
